Six Nigerian nationals have been deported from the United States after being charged with various crimes. Their deportation is part of the US government’s broader effort to send back at least 3,000 Nigerians involved in criminal activities.

The deportees arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on a Delta Airlines flight just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday. They were received by Nigerian government officials, who will assess the next steps regarding their cases.

This deportation follows the broader immigration policies enacted under the administration of former President Donald Trump, which aimed at tightening immigration enforcement. During his tenure, Trump introduced a sweeping crackdown on immigration, including increasing arrests for immigration violations, ramping up workplace raids, and targeting “sanctuary cities” that were seen as obstructing federal deportation efforts.

In line with his executive orders, Trump sought to increase deportations and reduce federal funding to cities and states that were perceived as not cooperating with immigration laws. His administration also aimed to publish a list of localities hindering the enforcement of federal immigration policies, which were to be scrutinized for potential funding cuts.

As of now, the deportation process continues to be part of the ongoing efforts to streamline immigration and ensure stricter enforcement.
