The United States Consulate in Lagos, in collaboration with the Media Career Development Network (MCDN), has launched a one-year training programme to strengthen investigative journalism among early-career reporters.

The initiative, titled the Bi-Monthly Journalism Clinic, is specifically designed for journalists with fewer than five years of professional experience. Held at the US Consulate during the week, the opening session brought together selected participants recognized for their passion for journalism and dedication to professional growth.

Speaking at the event, MCDN Executive Director, Lekan Otufodunrin, highlighted the programme’s goal of equipping journalists with practical investigative skills and access to mentorship opportunities. “Our objective is to develop professionals who can effectively inform the public and uphold journalistic integrity,” he said.

The clinic will cover a broad range of topics including local governance reporting, financial accountability, public health, data-driven investigations, ethical journalism, and the use of digital tools and open-source resources. Participants will also learn best practices in using social media and handling anonymous sources.

Acting Consul General, JoEllen Gorg, commended the attendees for their role in strengthening democracy and ensuring government accountability. “You are the eyes and ears of the people,” she noted. “Your work informs, uncovers truth, and promotes transparency—key pillars of a healthy democracy.”

She emphasized the US government’s ongoing support for journalism in Nigeria, stressing that trustworthy information helps citizens make crucial decisions regarding health, safety, and leadership.

Also speaking at the event, Public Affairs Officer Julie McKay encouraged journalists to engage with additional US-supported resources and programmes available through American Spaces across Nigeria.
