The British High Commission in Abuja has reaffirmed its backing for Nigeria’s efforts toward a sustainable energy transition.

Ms. Samantha Harrison, First Secretary for Climate Diplomacy, emphasized the United Kingdom’s commitment during a recent visit to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in Abuja.

According to a statement released by the NUPRC on Tuesday, discussions focused on collaborative opportunities to reduce gas flaring, a critical part of Nigeria’s plan to decarbonize its energy sector.

“The visit underscores the UK’s continued dedication to supporting Nigeria’s sustainable energy ambitions and promoting climate-resilient development as a foundation for lasting economic growth,” the statement noted.

Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of NUPRC, highlighted the commission’s pivotal role in advancing decarbonization within Nigeria’s upstream petroleum industry.

Komolafe explained that NUPRC is implementing a two-pronged approach to tackle gas flaring by both decarbonizing flare sites and converting the flared gas into economically valuable resources. This strategy aims not only to reduce environmental harm but also to boost national revenue.

A key part of this initiative is the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme, which currently targets 49 flare sites. The programme focuses on capturing gas that was previously wasted and repurposing it for productive use, thereby supporting both environmental sustainability and economic development.

Komolafe also acknowledged ongoing support from multilateral organizations such as the World Bank and Net Zero World, and expressed optimism about future collaborations with the British High Commission to further strengthen decarbonization efforts.

Following the visit, officials from NUPRC and the British High Commission engaged in a technical session aimed at building a strong and effective partnership.
