Following the release of the United Kingdom’s new Immigration White Paper on Monday, the British High Commission in Nigeria has issued a statement reaffirming the country’s commitment to its relationship with Nigeria.

A spokesperson for the British High Commission emphasized the deep and enduring ties between the two nations, noting that the UK remains a favored destination for Nigerians seeking opportunities to work, study, visit, or settle.

The newly unveiled White Paper outlines proposed reforms to the UK’s legal migration framework. These changes aim to reintroduce order and fairness into the system, reduce net migration, and bolster economic growth.

According to the Commission, the reforms will be rolled out gradually. The UK government has pledged to engage with Nigeria’s federal government as more details about the implementation become available.

“The UK enjoys strong, long-standing people-to-people links with Nigeria,” the statement read. “We are proud that the UK continues to be a top choice for Nigerians, and we value the contributions they make.”

It added: “The White Paper details reforms that seek to restore control and fairness to the migration system. We will consult with relevant Nigerian partners as these changes take shape.”

Reaffirming the UK’s inclusive stance, the statement concluded: “The UK has a proud tradition as an outward-looking nation welcoming the creativity, diversity, and ideas of those who come to contribute.”
