General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s long-time President Yoweri Museveni, has sparked outrage after threatening to deport citizens who oppose his father in the upcoming January elections.
Posting on X, Kainerugaba warned: “Those who do not support Mzee wholeheartedly better be very careful! We will deport all the traitors in public view!!” He used “Mzee,” a term of respect, to refer to President Museveni.
The general, known for his controversial social media posts, also declared that all women in the military must now wear skirts instead of trousers. “Trousers are for men, not for women,” he stated. “Anyone who forces our sisters to wear trousers on parade again will have a very bad day.”
His statements come amid increasing government crackdowns on opposition figures. Earlier this month, Kainerugaba claimed responsibility for the capture and beating of Eddie Mutwe, the bodyguard of opposition leader Bobi Wine. Justice Minister Norbert Mao confirmed Mutwe later appeared in court showing signs of torture.
Kainerugaba posted, “I take FULL responsibility for the actions of my soldiers, including the long overdue beating of Eddie Mutwe. That was an appetizer!”
Women make up a small percentage of the Ugandan People’s Defence Force and are typically issued the same uniforms as men, though skirts are allowed on formal occasions.
