U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a decision on potential military action against Iran will be made within the next two weeks, citing a “substantial” possibility of diplomatic negotiations.
At a White House briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read a statement from the president addressing rising speculation about possible U.S. involvement in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
“Given the substantial chance that negotiations with Iran may or may not take place soon, I will make my decision on whether to proceed within the next two weeks,” Trump stated.
Leavitt declined to elaborate on the nature of the negotiations or what prompted the president’s optimism. However, Trump had previously claimed that Iran requested to send officials to the White House to discuss its nuclear program and a potential end to hostilities with Israel—an assertion Iran has denied.
When asked about recent reports that Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, had engaged with Iran’s foreign minister, Leavitt confirmed that “correspondence has continued” between both countries. However, she said she was “not tracking” any plans for Witkoff to travel to Geneva for talks.
Thursday marked Trump’s third meeting this week in the White House Situation Room as he continues to weigh whether to align the U.S. with Israel’s military response.
Asked on Wednesday about possible military intervention, Trump replied, “I may do it, I may not do it.”
