Former U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Apple that iPhones sold in the United States must be manufactured domestically or face a 25% import tariff.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said he had previously informed Apple CEO Tim Cook of his expectation that iPhones sold in the U.S. should be made within the country, not in India or elsewhere.

“If that is not the case, a tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.,” he wrote.

Trump’s protectionist stance has previously disrupted international trade, with tariffs causing ripples across global markets.

The latest statement follows similar remarks he made during a trip to Qatar on May 15, where he said, “We’re not interested in you building in India… we want you to build here.”

During Apple’s Q1 earnings call earlier this month, Cook revealed that most iPhones sold in the U.S. would soon be made in India, while warning that U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports could cost the company $900 million this quarter. Although completed smartphones currently remain exempt from tariffs, several components used in Apple devices are not.
