On Sunday, President Donald Trump once again suggested that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, escalating tensions with one of America’s closest allies following the imposition of heavy tariffs. Trump, referencing the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, claimed that the U.S. pays “hundreds of billions of dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada,” adding that “without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country.” He further argued on his Truth social media platform that Canada should become the “Cherished 51st State,” touting the potential benefits of “much lower taxes, far better military protection,” and “NO TARIFFS!” for the Canadian people.
