A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Marmaris in southwestern Turkey early Tuesday, killing a teenage girl and injuring dozens, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

The tremor hit at 2:17 a.m. local time (2317 GMT Monday), about 10 km off the Marmaris coast, Turkey’s disaster agency AFAD reported. It was felt in parts of Greece and as far as Egypt.

Yerlikaya confirmed that a 14-year-old girl, Afranur Günlü, died in Fethiye—roughly 100 km east of Marmaris—after suffering a fatal panic attack during the quake. At least 70 people were injured in Mugla province, some while fleeing in panic, including individuals who jumped from heights.

Of the injured, 14 were treated at the scene, eight were discharged shortly after treatment, and 46 remain hospitalized.

Mugla province, home to tourist hotspots like Marmaris, Bodrum, and Fethiye, welcomed 3.7 million foreign visitors in 2024, according to state-run Anatolu Agency.

Greece’s Dodecanese islands also felt the tremor, with some tourists in Rhodes temporarily evacuating their hotels, said Efthymios Lekkas, head of Greece’s quake protection authority. No injuries were reported there or in Egypt, per the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics.
