Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed in an official statement on Monday. His passing came just one day after his public appearance during Easter celebrations at Saint Peter’s Square.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell delivered the announcement via the Vatican’s Telegram channel, saying, “Dearest brothers and sisters, it is with deep sorrow that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His church.”

Despite recovering from a serious illness, the Pope greeted thousands of faithful from the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica on Easter Sunday, offering his traditional *Urbi et Orbi* blessing and calling for peace, freedom of thought, and tolerance.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis had faced significant health challenges, including a severe case of pneumonia that nearly claimed his life. He was hospitalized for 38 days before being discharged on March 23.

His Easter appearance had given hope to many that he was regaining strength.
