A protest against President Donald Trump’s administration turned violent on Saturday night in Salt Lake City, Utah, when a shooting left one person critically injured.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. during a large demonstration that drew an estimated 10,000 participants as part of the nationwide “No Kings” rally. The protest coincided with a military parade held by President Trump in Washington, D.C.
The Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed via social media that one individual suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. Three people have been detained in connection with the incident.
Police Chief Brian Redd said during a press briefing that the protest had been peaceful until the shooting. One of those taken into custody was also hospitalized with a gunshot wound. Two additional individuals were arrested at the scene.
“At this time, there is no ongoing threat to the public,” Redd stated. He added that it was too early in the investigation to determine whether the shooting was politically motivated.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the violence, emphasizing that it does not reflect the values of the community.
“Today’s demonstration was a peaceful and powerful expression of First Amendment rights,” she said. “This violent act must not silence the voices of those who came to protest peacefully.”
