As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has described the nation’s democratic system as a vital pillar of stability in the West African subregion.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance amid growing political instability in parts of West Africa. He noted that regular elections, peaceful transitions of power, and respect for constitutional order have positioned Nigeria as a model for democracy in the region.

“Despite challenges, Nigeria continues to serve as a beacon of hope and stability,” Tuggar said. “Our democratic institutions, though not flawless, have proven resilient. In a time when democracy is under threat in several neighboring countries, Nigeria remains a stronghold for the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic engagement—key elements for lasting peace and development.”

His comments come at a time when the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is grappling with political crises in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, where military coups have undermined democratic processes.

Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for regional diplomatic efforts to restore civilian rule and emphasized that democracy must remain at the heart of conflict resolution strategies.

“Democracy is more than a domestic concern—it’s our strategic contribution to regional peace,” he said. “Nigeria’s political stability influences the entire West African region, and our progress reinforces the broader African democratic vision.”

The Minister also praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, commending his efforts to drive economic recovery and strengthen political institutions. He expressed optimism that current reforms would pave the way for long-term prosperity and democratic consolidation.
