The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Zambia following the death of former President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on June 5, 2025, at the age of 68.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed Nigeria’s sympathy through the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

“President Lungu served Zambia with distinction from 2015 to 2021,” the statement read. “During his tenure, he oversaw key national developments in infrastructure and diplomacy, while promoting the ideals of unity under the motto ‘One Zambia, One Nation.’”

The minister highlighted some of Lungu’s notable achievements, including initiatives that supported national unity, gender inclusivity — such as the appointment of Zambia’s first female president — and economic diversification.

“Nigeria recognizes President Lungu’s contributions to elevating Africa’s voice in global affairs and his dedication to regional solidarity,” Tuggar added.

He concluded by expressing solidarity with the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front party, and the people of Zambia.

“We join the international community in honoring his legacy. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” the statement said.
