Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual and a former advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, has walked back some of his recent comments about the president, expressing regret over what he now sees as overly harsh criticism.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far,” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns.
This statement comes just days after Trump publicly warned Musk of “serious consequences” if he tried to retaliate against Republican lawmakers who supported a contentious federal spending bill.
The rift between the two men played out dramatically on social media, capturing the attention of millions. The fallout began after Musk denounced Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending bill, currently under congressional review.
Some conservative lawmakers opposed to the bill had urged Musk — a major financial backer of the GOP during last year’s election — to support primary challenges against Republicans who backed the legislation.
In response, Trump criticized Musk as “disrespectful” and warned in an NBC News interview:
“He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.”
