Iran’s mission to the United Nations has strongly condemned France’s threats to reinstate sanctions that were lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement. Media outlets in Iran reported on Wednesday that the country views the threats as “unacceptable.”

On Monday, France, alongside Germany and Britain, stated that it would not hesitate to reapply sanctions if Iran’s nuclear activities jeopardize European security. This statement comes as Tehran and Washington engage in talks over a potential new deal.

In a letter shared by Iran’s ISNA news agency, the Iranian UN mission rejected the use of threats and economic coercion, calling it “entirely unacceptable.” Iran’s diplomatic representatives reiterated that “genuine diplomacy cannot proceed under threats or pressure.” They urged France and its European partners to abandon coercion if they are sincerely interested in a diplomatic resolution.

The 2015 nuclear agreement, which also includes China and Russia, allowed for the lifting of sanctions on Iran. However, the deal includes a “snapback” mechanism, allowing the reimposition of UN sanctions if Iran violates its commitments. This mechanism expires in October.

Iran and the United States have been engaged in high-level discussions since April 12, aiming for a new deal that would prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons, a goal Iran denies pursuing. In return, Iran seeks relief from sanctions. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has expressed willingness to visit Germany, France, and Britain for further talks.

The 2015 nuclear deal unraveled in 2018 when the United States, under President Donald Trump, withdrew from the agreement.
