Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Forecast Across Nigeria Starting Sunday — NiMet

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain across various parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet predicted localized thunderstorms over Taraba, Adamawa, and southern Kaduna on Sunday afternoon and evening. The North Central region is expected to have partly cloudy skies in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms in Plateau, the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Kogi States later in the day.

For the southern states, a cloudy morning is expected with chances of thunderstorms in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta. As the day progresses, localized thunderstorms are likely in Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, Bayelsa, and more.

Monday Outlook:

  • Sunny weather will dominate the northern region, with possible afternoon thunderstorms in parts of Adamawa, Kaduna, and Taraba.
  • The North Central area will see mostly sunny skies in the morning and isolated thunderstorms later in Plateau, the FCT, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa.
  • In the south, expect cloudy conditions with morning storms in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River. Thunderstorms are likely in Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, and several other states by evening.

Tuesday Forecast:

  • Northern states will experience mostly sunny skies, though Taraba may see some isolated storms.
  • North Central areas will have partly cloudy mornings, with afternoon thunderstorms expected in Benue, Kogi, Plateau, and more.
  • In the south, cloudy skies are predicted in the morning, with storms later in Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, and others.

NiMet also advised the public to take necessary precautions:

  • Stay in cool, well-ventilated areas and stay hydrated to reduce heat stress.
  • Get vaccinated against meningitis, maintain good hygiene, and wear face masks to avoid respiratory infections.
  • Avoid direct sunlight between noon and 3 p.m. and beware of strong winds that may precede storms.

Airline operators are urged to obtain detailed weather updates from NiMet for safer flight planning.
