Greek police have arrested a 59-year-old man in Alexandroupolis on suspicion of spying for Russia. Authorities allege he was photographing military supply convoys headed toward Ukraine.
The suspect, a Greek national of Georgian origin, was detained on Tuesday and appeared before an investigating magistrate on Friday. According to police, he confessed to recording military equipment and sending the images via an encrypted messaging app.
Footage recovered from his mobile phone reportedly shows him tracking convoys bound for Ukraine. A police source told AFP that the man had served in the Russian army in his youth and is believed to have been recruited by Russia’s GRU military intelligence through a Georgian intermediary based in Lithuania with alleged ties to organized crime.
Despite longstanding historical ties with Moscow, Greece has supported Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion. Alexandroupolis, a key port in northeastern Greece, has become a strategic hub for U.S. military logistics under a bilateral defense agreement.
