German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for restraint from both Israel and Iran, urging both nations to avoid any further escalation in their ongoing conflict. His statement followed Israel’s large-scale airstrikes targeting approximately 100 sites across Iran, including nuclear and military facilities.

Merz, who leads Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), emphasized the need for de-escalation to prevent destabilizing the entire Middle East. “Both parties must avoid actions that could further inflame the situation,” he said.

The German leader noted that he had been personally briefed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the operations, and had subsequently convened a meeting of Germany’s national security cabinet.

According to Israel, the strikes were aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear program. In response, Iran launched about 100 drones, most of which were intercepted before reaching Israeli airspace.

Chancellor Merz reaffirmed Germany’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself. “We support Israel’s right to ensure the security of its citizens and safeguard its existence,” he said, while also expressing long-standing concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Germany Pushes for Diplomatic Resolution

Merz stated that Germany remains committed to diplomacy and is ready to engage all possible channels to help de-escalate the crisis. “Our objective must remain preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons,” he said.

Iran has consistently denied pursuing nuclear weapons, despite international pressure and criticism. On Thursday, the UN nuclear watchdog adopted a resolution—co-sponsored by Germany and the United States—condemning Iran’s non-compliance with its nuclear commitments.

Meanwhile, the U.S. and Iran are set to resume nuclear negotiations, with a sixth round of talks scheduled in Oman this Sunday.

Security Measures in Germany

In light of the heightened tensions, Chancellor Merz also announced increased security measures for Jewish and Israeli institutions in Germany. The move comes amid a rise in antisemitic incidents, particularly since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
