The Benue State Police Command has opened an investigation into the sudden death of a French tourist, Pietier Gilles, who passed away while lodging at a hotel in Gboko.

According to police sources, the 67-year-old French national was found dead on Saturday. The incident was reported to the Gboko Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday.

Confirming the development, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said:

> “Yes, a French national who lodged in a hotel in Gboko was reported dead. The matter was brought to our attention on Sunday, and an investigation is ongoing.”

When contacted for more details, the hotel manager, Amina Cordial, explained that she had been out of town during the incident and had just returned to Gboko.

> “I was away and only just got back, so I don’t have full details of what happened,” she said. “However, the hotel owner was present and handled the necessary steps.”

Cordial, however, declined to provide contact information for the hotel owner.

Sources revealed that Gilles checked into the hotel on Friday. He reportedly became ill the following day but declined medical attention.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and authorities have yet to release further information.
