The Federal Government says it is closely tracking the ceasefire between Israel and Iran while maintaining readiness to evacuate Nigerians in the region if the situation worsens.

After weeks of escalating violence, U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a ceasefire between the two countries. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Nigeria’s ongoing evacuation plans for citizens, particularly in Iran.

As of last week, around 1,000 Nigerians in Iran were awaiting evacuation. The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran had completed arrangements for their transport to Armenia, where they would be flown home from the capital, Yerevan. However, clearance from Armenian authorities to cross the border is still pending.

To streamline the process, the embassy has submitted updated lists of evacuees to Iranian authorities and secured buses for transport.

Speaking to The PUNCH, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said, “We are monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire closely. The safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain our top priority. We are prepared to act if the situation changes.”

Background to the Crisis

The current conflict erupted on June 13, when Israel launched airstrikes on over 100 locations in Iran, including nuclear and military facilities. Iran responded with missile attacks, resulting in significant casualties.

Iran’s Health Ministry reports at least 610 civilian deaths and over 4,700 injuries. Among the dead are children, healthcare workers, and emergency responders. Hospitals and ambulances were also hit in the violence.

The crisis prompted several countries—including Germany, Greece, and Slovakia—to evacuate their citizens. Some evacuees reportedly crossed land borders on foot before being flown out.

Despite initially criticising both Israel and Iran for ceasefire violations, President Trump confirmed Tuesday that the ceasefire was holding and called on Israel to halt further military operations.
