Elon Musk has strongly criticized a new spending bill backed by President Donald Trump, calling it a “disgusting abomination” and a “pork-filled outrage” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The billionaire and X owner, who recently stepped down from his role as a special government employee at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), expressed deep concern over the bill’s potential impact on the federal deficit.
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote Tuesday. “It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.”
The bill, currently under Senate debate, proposes major tax cuts alongside increased spending on oil drilling, military expansion, and border security. It also includes sharp reductions in Medicaid and food assistance programs.
According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the bill could add up to $3.8 trillion to the national debt over the next decade and disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans.
In response, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt brushed off Musk’s remarks, saying, “The president already knows where Elon Musk stands. This is one big beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”
Musk’s concerns align with his past statements while leading DOGE, where he advocated for reduced government spending. Speaking at a recent event, he said, “I was disappointed to see this bill. It increases the deficit and undermines the work we’ve done at DOGE. A bill can be big or beautiful but probably not both.”
The proposed legislation includes $1.5 trillion in spending cuts intended to offset $4.5 billion in tax breaks. If savings aren’t achieved, the tax benefits would be scaled back.
