China on Tuesday expressed support for direct peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that both countries would begin immediate talks after his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“China supports all efforts aimed at achieving peace,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman, Mao Ning. She emphasized Beijing’s backing for “direct dialogue and negotiations” and called for a political resolution to the conflict.
Trump, who described his two-hour Monday call with Putin as a significant breakthrough, reiterated his campaign promise to help resolve the war within 24 hours if re-elected. However, Putin responded cautiously, stating Moscow is open to talks but expects mutual compromises.
Mao added, “It is hoped that the parties concerned will carry on with the dialogue and negotiation so as to reach a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement acceptable to all parties.”
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, China has maintained a stance of neutrality, though Western nations have accused it of indirectly supporting Russia through economic and diplomatic channels.
