The Chinese government has expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s continued commitment to the One-China policy—a diplomatic stance that recognizes Beijing as the sole legitimate authority representing all of China, including Taiwan.

At a media workshop held in Abuja, Zhu Songbo, Director of the Political Section at the Chinese Embassy, praised Nigeria’s consistent support, highlighting actions such as the relocation of the Taipei Trade Office from the capital. He also encouraged Nigerian journalists to avoid language that implies Taiwan is a separate state.

“Since diplomatic ties were established on February 10, 1971, Nigeria has recognized the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate government of China,” Zhu said. “This position was reaffirmed during recent high-level visits by President Tinubu and Foreign Minister Tuggar.”

He warned against the use of terms like “Republic of China” or “Taiwan Embassy,” stating such language contradicts the One-China principle and suggests the existence of “two Chinas.”

Zhu urged Nigerian media to promote peace and objectivity in reporting on China-Taiwan issues.

Supporting this, Charles Onunaiju, Director of the Centre for China Studies, described China and Taiwan as “one people” and stressed that the Taipei Trade Office in Lagos is strictly for commercial purposes, not diplomatic. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s adherence to the One-China principle, calling it “non-negotiable.”

“Taiwan’s reunification with China is inevitable,” Onunaiju added.
