US Representative Oye Owolewa of the District of Columbia has called on Congress to launch an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump following a military strike on Iran.
In a statement released, the Nigerian-American lawmaker condemned Trump’s decision to authorize a missile launch on Iranian territory over the weekend, labeling it an “unconstitutional act of war.”
“President Donald Trump carried out an unconstitutional act of war yesterday without Congressional approval,” Owolewa said. “For this reason, Congress must launch an impeachment inquiry.”
The Democratic representative criticized the administration for prioritizing military action while neglecting critical domestic issues, such as education funding.
“For decades, Americans have been told that the country cannot afford free college education or student loan forgiveness,” Owolewa added. “Yet, we somehow find the resources to fund wars that cost more than those initiatives combined.”
He further accused the Trump administration of serving the interests of the military-industrial complex, warning that the latest strike could escalate tensions and drag the United States closer to a global conflict.
