Tensions in the Middle East escalated dramatically after the United States launched airstrikes early Sunday targeting three critical Iranian nuclear facilities: Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. The operation, authorized by President Donald Trump, triggered a spectrum of international responses, underscoring the widening global divide over how to address the escalating crisis.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly supported the US action, labeling Iran’s nuclear program as “a grave threat to international security,” according to The Guardian. Starmer emphasized that the strikes were intended to neutralize this threat and urged Iran to return to diplomatic talks.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed Starmer’s position, calling on Tehran to “exercise restraint” and re-engage in negotiations. Meanwhile, Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, appealed for de-escalation. In a statement on X, Kallas urged all parties to step back and return to dialogue, stressing that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. EU foreign ministers are scheduled to discuss the crisis on Monday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba also expressed serious concern, saying, “We are closely monitoring the situation.”

In stark contrast, China and Russia strongly condemned the US airstrikes. China’s foreign ministry, as reported by Xinhua, denounced the bombings as violations of the UN Charter and international law, warning they would further destabilize the region. The ministry called for an immediate ceasefire and urged Israel to engage in de-escalation efforts.

Similarly, Russia criticized the US move as “irresponsible” and a blatant breach of international law. Moscow called for a halt to hostilities and renewed diplomatic negotiations, according to The Moscow Times.

Iran responded with a stern warning that the strikes would have lasting consequences, raising fears of an expanded conflict in an already volatile region.
