Nigerian political economist and former CBN Deputy Governor, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, has raised concerns over Israel’s recent military strike on Iran’s suspected nuclear facilities, warning that the move could destabilize global peace and security.

In a statement on his official X account on Friday, Moghalu described the attack as a dangerous escalation in an already fragile international system.

“Israel’s attack on what it claims are Iran’s nuclear sites significantly raises the stakes. It has ignited global debate about the legality of such action under international law,” he said.

Moghalu explained that under international law, preemptive self-defence is only justified if there’s an imminent and clear threat—not based on speculation or long-term assumptions.

He noted that while Israel views Iran’s nuclear ambition as an existential threat, the credibility of that threat remains widely debated.

“Determining whether Iran has reached the so-called ‘point of no return’ is complex and contested. There is no clear consensus on how close they are to developing nuclear weapons,” Moghalu added.

He criticized Israel’s choice to bypass diplomacy in favor of unilateral military action, saying it risks setting a dangerous precedent.

“This move sidelines diplomatic and multilateral channels. It could embolden other nations to act similarly, escalating future conflicts.”

Moghalu also warned of broader regional consequences:

“Retaliation from Iran directly or via proxies is expected. With deep-rooted hostilities between both nations, the risk of a broader war cannot be ruled out.”

In conclusion, Moghalu questioned both the legal and moral legitimacy of Israel’s actions, calling on the global community to reflect on the implications for international norms and state sovereignty.

“While Israel may claim justification under international law, the strike raises serious concerns about the future of global order. The world must prepare for heightened instability.” script.
