Pope Leo XIV on Sunday urged the global community to reject nationalism and the “exclusionary mindset” that he said is driving division and fear worldwide. Speaking during a Pentecost Mass in St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff encouraged openness and solidarity, calling for hearts and minds to “open their borders.”

Although he did not directly mention specific conflicts or leaders, Pope Leo’s message was clear and resonant. “Where there is love, there is no room for prejudice, for ‘security’ zones separating us from our neighbours,” he said. “We must move beyond our fear of those who are different.”

The Pentecost homily marked one month since the election of the former Robert Prevost from Chicago as pope. Under sunny skies, he delivered the message before an estimated crowd of 80,000, following a warm reception during his traditional tour of the square in the popemobile.

“The Church must open the borders between peoples and break down the barriers between class and race,” he continued, emphasizing that the Holy Spirit “tears down the walls of indifference and hatred.”

Without referencing specific national policies, the pope’s comments on walls and exclusion echoed ongoing political debates, including those in the United States surrounding immigration and border security.

Pope Leo also addressed broader social issues, warning against the spread of toxic relationships rooted in domination and prejudice. “With great pain,” he said, “we see cases marked by a desire for control, often leading to violence, as shown in the heartbreaking rise in femicide.”

In Italy, several high-profile femicide cases have drawn national attention, including the recent killing of a 14-year-old girl by her boyfriend.

Turning to digital life, Leo warned about the isolating effects of social media. “Constantly connected, yet incapable of networking. Always immersed in a crowd, yet confused and solitary travellers,” he said.

Since his election on May 8, Pope Leo has emphasized unity, dialogue, and bridge-building. He has already offered to mediate in international conflicts and held his first phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week.

Pentecost, which concludes the Easter season, celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and disciples of Jesus Christ — a theme reflected in the pope’s call for spiritual and social renewal.
