The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a renewed partnership with the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) to enhance access to climate and weather information for small-scale farmers across Nigeria.
The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at NiMet’s headquarters. According to a statement released by NiMet’s media team on Wednesday, the initiative aims to strengthen the delivery of agro-meteorological services to farming communities.
“The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has formalised its partnership with the Human and Environmental Development Agenda by signing a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at expanding agro-meteorological information delivery to smallholder farmers across Nigeria,” the statement read in part.
This new agreement builds on an existing relationship between both organisations that dates back to 2010. It represents a renewed commitment to improving the accessibility and usefulness of climate data for rural communities.
At the signing event were Sulaimon Arigbabu, Executive Secretary of the HEDA Resource Centre, and Miss Tonye Dappa, Legal and Liaison Officer. Both expressed gratitude to NiMet’s Director-General and CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, for his leadership and ongoing support.
Professor Anosike emphasized the importance of partnerships in bridging the gap between climate science and practical application at the grassroots level. He also offered NiMet’s studio facilities for the joint creation of educational content tailored to farmers’ needs.
The partnership is designed to:
Expand access to accurate and timely climate information
Enhance disaster preparedness
Promote climate-smart agriculture
Strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to climate change
The statement concluded by reaffirming both institutions’ shared commitment to ensuring that essential climate information reaches those who need it most—especially farmers who are often vulnerable to the impacts of extreme weather.
