Harvard University President Alan Garber has announced he will take a voluntary 25% pay cut, as the prestigious institution faces growing reductions in federal funding under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The pay cut is set to take effect on July 1, coinciding with the start of the new fiscal year.

It is typical for Harvard presidents to earn over \$1 million annually. According to university spokesperson Jonathan L. Swain, other senior leaders at Harvard have also volunteered to modify their compensation.

The Trump administration has been critical of several universities, including Harvard, accusing them of promoting left-wing ideologies. The government has pressured these institutions to end diversity initiatives and comply with new policies regarding admissions, campus conduct, and hiring. Harvard has resisted many of these directives and has pursued legal challenges against the federal government.

In response to the escalating tensions, federal agencies have announced plans to cut an additional \$450 million in grants, on top of an existing freeze of \$2.2 billion in multi-year federal funding. This decision follows accusations that Harvard had not adequately addressed incidents of anti-Semitism on campus.

Garber has denied the accusations, asserting that the university has taken steps to address the issue. He also expressed concerns that the administration’s actions are infringing upon the constitutional rights of private institutions.
