The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has denied allegations that visa delays were responsible for the Nigerian relay team’s withdrawal from the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou.

Responding on Saturday to media reports and statements from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the Embassy attributed the issue to a misunderstanding over the visa process timeline.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Embassy said it received a visa assistance request from Nigeria’s National Sports Commission on April 24, referencing a letter dated April 22. The Embassy stated it promptly responded and provided guidance on preparing the necessary documents.

According to the Embassy, the China Visa Application Centre received the athletes’ application materials on May 6, and expedited processing began immediately. All visas were reportedly issued by May 8—two days before the event.

“The Embassy activated the expedited procedure and provided maximum support to the Nigerian applicants,” the statement read. “We regret the athletes couldn’t attend, but the AFN’s claim of delay is not supported by the facts.”

The Embassy emphasized that visa issuance is a sovereign matter, subject to standard documentation requirements and timelines. It reaffirmed its support for bilateral cooperation in sports and people-to-people exchanges.

“The Embassy has always welcomed Nigerian athletes and provided efficient visa services,” the statement added. “We remain committed to supporting future sports collaboration.”

Despite the setback, China expressed continued interest in strengthening sporting ties with Nigeria.
