The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and hazy weather affecting various parts of Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday.

In a weather update released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet warned of moderate dust haze in states including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa. The agency also predicted isolated thunderstorms in Adamawa and Taraba during the forecast period, as shared on its X (formerly Twitter) handle.

For the North-Central region, NiMet expects partly cloudy skies in the morning, with possible isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening across the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States.

In the southern regions, morning thunderstorms are expected in Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, with further thunderstorms later in the day spreading across other southern states.

On Monday, NiMet anticipates mostly sunny skies in the northern part of the country, although morning thunderstorms could occur in Adamawa and Taraba. Thunderstorms are also expected to spread to parts of Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe States in the afternoon.

The North-Central will experience morning thunderstorms in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue, with more storms in the afternoon and evening. In the South, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo States may see morning thunderstorms, with further rain expected throughout the day.

Tuesday’s forecast predicts sunny weather with some clouds in the North, while morning thunderstorms may occur in parts of Adamawa and Taraba. Thunderstorms could also affect parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba later in the day. The North-Central is expected to have partly cloudy mornings, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms in places like the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger States.

Southern regions, including Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa, may experience early morning thunderstorms, with additional storms expected later in the day across the region.

NiMet has advised caution, particularly as strong winds may precede rainstorms in areas with expected thunderstorms. The agency also warned residents in the North to be mindful of dust particles in the air. Airline operators were urged to consult up-to-date weather reports from NiMet for safe flight planning.
