Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom, following her inauguration as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on May 16, 2025.

At just 29 years old, Bright’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Nigerians in the diaspora and signals a promising future for youth leadership in global politics. Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, her rise symbolizes both personal triumph and the increasing influence of the Nigerian community abroad.

“This is nothing short of God’s grace,” Bright said during her inauguration ceremony. “I’m proud to serve my borough. As a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.”

Bright’s political career began at the age of 22 when she was elected as a councillor. Over the past seven years, she has focused on youth empowerment, social inclusion, and creating economic opportunities within her community—a dedication deeply rooted in her upbringing.

She is the daughter of Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, who served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, a senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Princess Bright’s rise is part of a broader trend showcasing the expanding political footprint of Nigerians around the world. From Kemi Badenoch, UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, to Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara and US Representative Esther Agbaje, Nigerian-born leaders are shaping policies and narratives across continents.

Her election not only challenges stereotypes about youth disengagement in politics but also highlights the vital roles women and immigrants play in leadership. At a time when Nigeria is in need of positive representation, Bright’s success offers a powerful example of the country’s soft power and global influence.

More than a personal victory, her journey serves as a rallying point for Nigerian policymakers to recognize and engage the potential of the diaspora. Investing in youth leadership, fostering global partnerships, and encouraging diaspora contributions could unlock immense opportunities for national development.

Princess Bright’s story is one of resilience, purpose, and inspiration—proving that with the right support and values, Nigerian youth can lead anywhere in the world.
