More than 273,000 Syrians have returned home from Turkey following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December, according to Turkey’s Vice-President Cevdet Yilmaz.
“The number of people who have voluntarily returned to Syria since December 8, 2024, has exceeded 273,000,” Yilmaz said, as quoted by the state-run Anadolu news agency.
Despite the returns, Turkey still hosts approximately 2.7 million Syrian refugees, based on May figures from the country’s interior ministry.
The Turkish government, which now supports Syria’s new leadership, has expressed hopes of accelerating repatriation efforts to ease social and political tensions tied to the prolonged refugee presence.
