NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Thunderstorms and Rain Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rain nationwide from Wednesday through Friday.

NiMet’s outlook released Tuesday in Abuja predicts early morning thunderstorms on Wednesday over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, and Adamawa in northern Nigeria. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are expected in Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi states.

In the North Central region, early morning thunderstorms will affect Benue, Kwara, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa. Later, rainstorms are anticipated across the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau states.

The southern region will experience cloudy conditions with chances of morning rain in Ondo, Ekiti, and Edo states, followed by isolated thunderstorms in Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers during the afternoon and evening.

On Thursday, morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, and Taraba, with afternoon rains over Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, Gombe, and Bauchi. The North Central region will see patchy clouds with sunshine and early morning storms in Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT. Thunderstorms are forecast later in the day for the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau.

Southern states of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are likely to experience morning thunderstorms, with isolated afternoon rains expected in Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers.

Friday will bring morning thunderstorms to Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba. Afternoon rains are anticipated in Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Kaduna, and Bauchi. In the North Central zone, patchy clouds and sunshine intervals are forecast, with thunderstorms expected over the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Niger. Kwara, Benue, and Kogi may see afternoon or evening storms.

Southern states including Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River will experience morning rain and isolated thunderstorms later in the day.

NiMet warns of strong winds accompanying thunderstorms and advises the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, unplug electrical appliances, and stay clear of tall trees. Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather updates from NiMet for safe flight planning.
