The journey of Jacklin Osman, a female shoemaker in a male-dominated industry
In a society where traditional gender roles often dictate career choices, Jackline Osman—a 23-year-old University of Ghana graduate—has broken barriers in Ghana’s male-dominated shoemaking industry, powered by passion, grit, and a degree in political science.
Her story unfolds with inspiring determination, triumphing over societal expectations and personal setbacks to chase her dream.
Early Life and Inspiration:
Jackline’s path into shoemaking began after senior high school, when she chose to learn a hands-on craft. Growing up in a family of skilled artisans, she felt drawn to shoemaking after observing a local cobbler at work. Despite her parents’ preference for her to pursue sewing, Jackline, a native of Bawku in the Upper East Region, embarked on a unique path guided by her own interests. While awaiting admission to the University of Ghana, she made good use of that waiting period to learn shoemaking—a skill she would later turn into a full-time pursuit after her National Service.
She eventually gained admission to study Political Science and French. After her National Service, she decided to put her shoemaking skills to use. Although she has been a shoemaker for about seven years, she has practised full-time for the past two years.

Some guys would say, ‘Go home; I will pray for you so that you find a man to marry. You are a lady; you don’t have to be doing this work.’ But others have also been inspiring, purchasing my products and showing support.
Overcoming Challenges:
Her resilience is unwavering. She told Pulse Ghana’s Andreas Kamasah:
None of the words people throw at me has made me want to stop shoemaking. The only time I consider giving up is when I get really tired.

Achievements and Milestones:
Her business, simply named ‘Jackline O’, has managed to stay afloat despite the unpredictable nature of the market.
There are times you’re busy throughout the week, and other times it’s very quiet. But so far so good; the good days make up for the bad ones.
Early Setbacks and Lessons:
Jackline recalls a painful early experience of being scammed after landing a major order.
A man ordered four pairs of shoes and two slippers. It was my first big order, and I invested everything I had. I made the shoes and met him for delivery, but he disappeared with the products and never paid. That was my foundation, and he scammed me. It still hurts because the money was quite significant.

Vision for the Future:
Looking ahead, Jackline sees major growth for her business. From a tiny corner of her room to a functional workshop, her journey is steadily progressing.
I see something big in my head, and so far, I see myself walking towards that vision.

Changing Perceptions:
Jackline wants to reframe how people view shoemakers.
I want to move away from cobbling because it doesn’t allow me to focus on my craft. I want people to understand that I create shoes from scratch, not just fix them.
Appeal for Support:
The industrious young woman currently lacks the machines and equipment that could enhance her production.
We are in a technological world. To produce more efficiently, you need machines. Right now, everything is manual, which limits how much I can produce in a day. I need machines to scale up, employ and train others, and grow this business. If anyone wants to help, please do. I enjoy this work and want to make a bigger impact.
Jackline Osman’s transformation from a political science graduate to a dedicated shoemaker is a testament to the power of passion, purpose, and perseverance. Her story not only inspires but also challenges traditional norms, proving that with determination, anything is possible.
