Some security vehicles were also destroyed during the clash in the encounter between the bandits and vigilantes.

A fierce gun battle between the Civilian Joint Task Force and bandits led by the notorious kingpin, Bello Turji, has reportedly left scores of people dead in the Chida community, in the Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to security sources, the confrontation occurred when a combined team of Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) operatives and an ex-bandit, Bashir Maniya, on Monday, launched a counter-banditry operation into Fakai general area, a known stronghold of the bandits’ kingpin in the state.

The source disclosed that in response, Bello Turji mobilised a large number of heavily armed fighters to confront the security team.

The ensuing gunfight resulted in the death of several CJTF operatives, including Bashir Maniya. Some security vehicles were also destroyed during the clash.

“The local vigilantes and Bashir Maniya led the team to the area with an intention of neutralising Turji but in the process, he was informed by his fighters about the attack and he mobilised some of his lieutenants and other heavily armed foot soldiers.

“They laid ambush for the security team and opened fire on them; several JTF members and Bashir Maniya were killed during the gunbattle.

“Although, we can’t confirm the exact number of the casualties, it was from both CJTF and bandits’ side.”

A local resident around the area, who pleaded anonymity for security reasons also confirmed the incident, adding that several neighbouring villages were thrown into panic and confusion during the gun battle.

“Some of our people fled their houses when the two groups were exchanging fire, the whole community was thrown into confusion because of the gunshots we were hearing,” the source said.

In a one minute, three seconds video released after the attack, Bello Turji was seen alongside his fighters, reacting to the encounter.

Efforts to get official confirmation from security authorities in the state are still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
