The Edo State Government has announced a new partnership with the People’s Republic of China aimed at advancing cooperation in education, culture, science, and technology.

Governor Monday Okpebholo hosted a delegation from China’s Fujian Jiangxia University on Wednesday at the Government House in Benin City. The delegation was led by the university’s President, Ling Qzdan.

According to a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the visit signals a growing interest in institutional collaboration between Edo and Chinese academic institutions. The partnership particularly focuses on cooperation between Fujian Jiangxia University and Edo’s Ambrose Alli University.

Governor Okpebholo described the partnership as a long-anticipated opportunity, noting the importance of international collaborations for sustainable knowledge transfer and capacity building.

“We are delighted to welcome you to Benin City, a place rich in culture and history,” Okpebholo said. “This collaboration presents an opportunity to exchange knowledge across various fields, especially in education and technology. Learning is lifelong, and knowledge exchange is central to our vision for Edo’s transformation.”

Highlighting the state’s cultural depth, Okpebholo expressed hope that China would benefit from Edo’s heritage, just as Edo would leverage China’s technological expertise.

“This partnership, especially the agreement between your university and Ambrose Alli University, is of immense value,” he added.

In his remarks, President Ling Qzdan said the visit was aimed at formalizing ties between the two institutions and expanding cooperation in education, culture, and research. He noted that both universities shared common academic disciplines and facilities, forming a strong foundation for collaboration.

“We believe joint initiatives and leadership dialogue can enhance academic excellence and deepen mutual understanding,” Qzdan said.

Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, hailed the partnership as a “strategic milestone” for the future of education in the state. He revealed that documentation for a formal technical agreement would begin in September.

“We are focused on raising a globally competitive student population, grounded in science, technology, and life skills,” Iyamu said.

“The Chinese are world leaders in infrastructure and tech. Integrating their expertise into our system will improve learning outcomes and drive broader economic growth.”
