Some newly trained teachers in Ghana have taken to the streets, demanding payment of their salaries and the release of their staff ID numbers, after nearly a year of waiting without response.
The protest, which took place on Monday, June 23, at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra, saw graduates from the 2022 batch of Colleges of Education expressing deep frustration over ten months of unpaid work.
The teachers said they had formally written to GES about their issues but were ignored. After waiting for more than two hours outside the GES building with no acknowledgement from officials, the group was confronted by police who issued a three-minute warning to vacate the premises. When they refused, they were forcefully dispersed.
Refusing to back down, the teachers announced plans to sleep overnight in Accra to continue their protest today. On Tuesday, they intend to deliver a petition to the Ministry of Finance and then march to Parliament to seek the intervention of lawmakers.
Until their demands are met, the teachers say they will keep pressing. The Ghana Education Service is yet to officially respond to the protest.
